I love moss covered letters and have seen them for sale in catalogs, but they aren’t cheap. Last year I made several for family members and hung them from ribbon. This year, I decided to spell out JOY and hang the letters from an old screen that was salvaged from my brother-in-laws barn. There are so many different things you can do with them like hang them from a grapevine wreath or place them on a bookshelf. Moss letters are very simple to make and it took me about an hour to cover all three letters.
You can purchase the moss in sheets from Hobby Lobby. I also purchased the letters from Hobby Lobby. They sell chipboard letters as well as wood ones. If you’re really crafty, you could also make your own out of heavy duty cardboard. You’ll need a hot glue gun for this project. I also used a spray adhesive to secure the moss onto the letters, but hot glue works too. One package of sheet moss covers two letters. You’ll have extra left over which you can use for another project. I thought about covering small letters with the left over moss, but didn’t get around to it. Another project for another day.
- Lay the sheet moss out on a table, moss side down. Spray the letter with adhesive and lay it on top of the moss backing so that it faces the correct direction. This is probably obvious, but you want the front of the letter covered in moss.
- Cut around the letter leaving at least an inch of space around it so that you can fold it over and hot glue it to the back.
- Where there are corners you’ll need to make a slit in the moss so that it folds over. I also found it helpful to make little slits and hot glue small sections at a time.
- This project is a little messy, but if you mess up it’s easy to correct because the moss is forgiving. If you have a bare spot you can just patch it with a little piece of moss.
I originally I thought I’d attach my letters to ribbon with 3M Command Strips. I’d read about them on Liz Marie Blog, but they didn’t work well for this project so I used hot glue as well. However, I did use the Command Strips to hang a picture and they worked great. What do you think? Would you try making a letter or perhaps you’ve got an even better idea you’d like to share. Thanks for this great idea! I bought a moss letter for my front door (you’re right – not cheap!) that has faded. I hadn’t even thought about re-doing it, but will try it!

What a wonderful project. Who knew you could buy moss in sheets? I assume this is artificial moss? I wish I had a Hobby Lobby…
