Kansas isn’t typically known as the wine country, but I recently visited a little family owned vineyard and winery about 35 minutes from my home. The winery was established in 2001 and owners Dennis and Cindy Reynolds expanded their operations in 2005. It’s currently 2012 and I’m realizing I really need to venture out of my Johnson County box more often. For those of you who are familiar with the Louisburg Cider Mill, it’s located just right down the street in Paola, Kansas. If you don’t know about the Cider Mill that is another small find which I’ll post about another day.
Somerset Ridge has a quaint and rather large outdoor patio area with many tables and chairs where you can share a bottle of wine and a picnic lunch. Local Food Truck El Tenedor is often parked at the Winery on the weekends. They serve delicious Spanish cuisine.
I also really enjoyed the Citron which is a Kansas Grape wine with natural lemon flavors. It think it would be delicious in a martini. I have yet to experiment with it though.
If you aren’t able to make it out to Napa Valley (which is a beautiful place) anytime soon, I suggest visiting a winery in your local area. Somerset Ridge is open Wednesday-Saturday from 11:00-5:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 5:00. Click here for directions.
