Hipster is defined as a person who follows the latest trends and fashions . My son thinks I’m trying to be a hipster because I blog. His teenage opinion thinks I’m way too old to be blogging. I’ve told him there are grandmothers who blog, and they have great blogs. The first one which comes to my mind is ZuHaus at Home.
Do you ever wonder what the people that take their computers to Starbucks are writing about? Maybe they aren’t writing, maybe they’re just surfing the internet. I always imagine they’re writing the next great American novel or working on an English paper. When I got my first Apple laptop computer, I envisioned myself drinking a caramel macchiato and spending the afternoon at Starbucks writing. I’ve brought my laptop to Starbucks, but I have yet to compose a novel. I’ve used it for meetings with other bloggers about projects we were working on. Namely, the Lazy Days and BBQ series. If you missed it, you can click on the link to check it out.
Do people that take their laptop computers think their hipsters or do they just need to get out of the house? I love that this guy took a typewriter which has become obsolete. I learned to type on a typewriter which is definitely not hipster appropriate. I love antique typewriters and have one displayed in my office area. Hipster or not this photo makes me smile.

I got my graduate degree in Starbucks. I got so distracted at home, that I figured paying $5 for a place where I could focus and attend and get my work done was worth every penny. So now when I see people writing in Starbucks, I think, “Oh! I get it, your phone doesn’t ring here, the dishes don’t call you from the sink, the bills don’t wink at you and no one knows where you are. You found peace and quiet and room to think.” Oh! And if you go often, people recognize you and tell you what they are working on. I met a guy who dedicated his novel to Starbucks. The dedication read something like, “Dedicated to Starbucks. For the sheer price of 82 mochas, 24 cappuccinos and 118 Venti coffees, you provided me with a great office from which to write.”

That is a great story Stacey. I get easily distracted at home as well. I think I would be equally distracted at Starbucks though. I’d be listening to other people’s conversations, etc. Have you ever read the book “How Starbucks Saved My Life”? It’s a great story.

I’ve never read “How Starbucks Saved My Life!” Adding it to my Amazon wishlist now! Thanks for the recommendation!

OK… idea. I, too, have a vintage typewriter Dawn. Let’s take our typewriters up to a (super busy) Starbucks and get ourselves “all set up”… and then watch the reaction. Ha!! You game?? 😀
