Gold makes me smile. Not just because it’s worth a lot of money, but because it reminds me of my mother. She has always been a big fan of gold jewelry particularly when it’s 14Karat. She loves gold so much that we even had metallic gold vertical blinds that covered our dining room windows. It wasn’t quite like Donald Trump’s home, but it definitely made a statement. She’s also a HUGE fan of leopard print, but I’ll save that story for another day.
Gold and brass have taken a back seat for awhile when it comes to home decor, but they are making their way back. I’ve found myself becoming drawn to gold again. I jumped for joy (not really, it just sounded good) when I came across this DIY gilding challenge on the blog Fieldstone Hill Design. I’m not much of a DIY gal if it’s a project that requires power tools or a lot of patience. However, this project was one I had just completed before I saw the post.
The challenge is to gild something or paint it gold then use it in a lovely display. Nine other bloggers are sharing the challenge on their sites along with their projects. I’d been eyeing a navy blue crab that’s part of the Nate Berkus home decor collection at Target. My zodiac sign is Cancer the Crab so I’m a little partial to crustaceans. The problem was I don’t have an ounce of navy blue in my house and the color doesn’t match my decor. I thought Mr. Crab would be perfect if he were gold. I wanted a gold accent piece so I decided to paint him with some gold acrylic paint I already owned. How hard could it be? As you can see from my photo of Mr. Crab he’s not perfectly solid gold. I kind of like that you can still see some of the navy underneath, but it looks black. I toyed with the idea of buying some gold spray paint and completely covering him, but I decided I sort of like the weathered effect. He goes well with my weathered wood table. He’s not perfect, but then again neither am I. What do you think? About the crab that is.

love your little crab! i’m a bit fickle when it comes to gold, but you’ve kinda inspired me…I maybe can do more of a bronze/ or antiqued brass. 😉
dawn says
Thanks Gina. Both the bronze and antiqued brass would be nice too. I know what you mean about gold. A little gold goes a long way.

Looks so gorgeous!! I love it! And I love that the navy shines through!

Thanks Stacey. The perfectionist in me wanted to buy some spray paint and cover him completely, but then I decided I sort of liked the brush stroke effect.

This was a lot easier than the bookcase and more my speed. Although, I still haven’t given up on the bookcase. That will be another post.
