These are a few things I’ve been loving this week.
I love these 15 quotes on creativity from Twister Sifter. Sometimes a simple quote can be empowering.
I love this DIY message board from Jenna at Rain On A Tin Roof. I love the fabric she used to cover her bulletin board and the little gold hardware she used on the corners. However, I especially love the pushpins. She spray painted $1 store little animals gold and hot glued them to a pushpin. I used to have dozens of those little plastic animals lying around my house when my son was little. They were his favorite toy to play with for years. This project is definitely on my to do list and it’s something I can accomplish in an hour. Jenna’s project is part of a trash to treasure series hosted by several bloggers the first Friday of every month.
I made a trip to Aldi this week. I think I have only been to Aldi one other time and that was at least 15 plus years ago. It seems like food prices have sky rocketed the last few years, and I was curious how much I could really save at Aldi. I know of a few food bloggers who shop there. At the risk of sounding like a grocery store snob, I thought if these people are foodies it can’t be all that bad. Ali at Gimme Some Oven has written several posts about Aldi. She even took a tour of their headquarters. I armed myself with my list per Ali of what to buy at Aldi. I came home with mostly non-perishable items. A few of the foodsI have yet to try, but the one thing I dug into right away was the chocolate. I love chocolate! I’m loving Moser & Roth’s Chili Dark Chocolate Bar. I know it sounds strange, but it has a little heat to it which I like. It costs roughly two dollars and what I thought was one large bar is actually five individual bars which is even better. The chocolate is made in Germany and also comes in milk chocolate. Will I shop at Aldi every week? The prices are pretty low, but I’m not convinced to do my big shopping there yet. However, I would go back for certain items. Are you an Aldi shopper and if so what are some of your favorite items?
What were some of your simple joys this week? Do tell!

Thanks for giving my sassy bulletin board a shout-out!

We don’t have an Aldi near us, but I try to stop by once in a while. They quite often have excellent prices on seasonal fruit like blueberries. Around the holidays they have a nice variety of goat cheese and dips. My kids like the deli type salsa they carry also. We all like the Benita Premium ice cream bars in strawberry. They even make snack size bars for only about 85 calories. I’ve never been able to do all my weekly shopping there, but it is a nice supplement.

Thanks Julie! I’ll have to check it out around the holidays. They did have hummus which was good. I’ve also heard their chips are really good. I bought some sweet potato chips, but haven’t tried them yet. Their chips are much cheaper.

Aldi was founded by a German family, two brothers, by the name of Albrecht in 1913. The stores name comes from Albrecht Discount Al-Di. Trader Joe’s is a spin off of Aldi, or sister to. Interesting little tidbit, eh?
Not all Aldi’s are created equally….some are better than others. I haven’t been in a long time, but when I did go, it was usually around Easter or Christmas when I wanted really good quality chocolate at a good price to go into the stockings or easter baskets. And of course…being European…ALDI had the BEST selection of interesting packaging, pretty little chocolates to fancy up the holidays. I hear their produce is really good. Maybe I should try it again.

I bought a pineapple, but that was the only produce. I’m loving the chili dark chocolate. I’ll have to check it out at Christmas. I agree with you that I think they probably aren’t all the same. It’s sort of like Price Chopper, some are better than others.

We love Aldi!! Jake and I are sad we didn’t discover it earlier. We shop there every week. We still go to Price Chopper for meat and chicken and other items, but definitely Aldi fans. I buy as many of my baking ingredients as I can there, too! We usually buy…
Chips (I don’t remember the last time we bought ‘name brand’ chips)
Bread
Nuts
Sour Cream
Cream Cheese
Bacon
Milk
Eggs
Their Take and Bake Pizza is really good. We love the thin crust.
Frozen Shrimp
Baggies and Paper Towels
I’ve baked with their cereals and they tasted just like the name brand too.
Have a good weekend!!

Thanks for the list Chelsea! Do you shop at the one on 135th and Antioch or is their another one close by? I bought some chips, but haven’t dug into them yet. The chocolate was my priority 🙂

Who would ever have thought THAT was how she did the push pins?! GENIUS!! I used to have lots of those little things around! They totally give the message board that special touch!!
Oh, Dawn…until RIGHT THIS MINUTE I was sitting her doing just fine. Now I’m TOTALLY craving chocolate. Why don’t we have any Aldi’s here?!?!?! UNFAIR!! (And now I’m off to seek something chocolate!) –Lisa

I agree on the push pins Lisa. I apologize for prompting the chocolate craving 🙂 My friend reminded me of some easy pumpkin muffins I make and I had to make them two days later because I couldn’t quit thinking about them.

Dawn, I was doing a little “catch up time” this morning and went back over a few past blogs…… The Aldi info made me chuckle! My 94 year old grandmother loves their crunchy “cheetos” when she is in town she stocks up!
I do recall my pilates friend telling me that she once trained the wife of one of the Aldi corp. CEO’s and she told her that the Aldi chocolates are some of the finest you can buy anywhere!
dawn says
Wow 94 years old and still eating cheetos. I guess they can’t be that bad for you 🙂 I just tried their tortilla chips, and I really can’t tell a difference between theirs and Tostitos. I really am impressed with the chili chocolate. Thanks for sharing!
