A friend of mine has an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party every year. It seems to have become a popular party theme over the years. They even sell an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book. I wish had kept all of my Christmas sweaters that I proudly wore back in the 80’s and early 90’s. Every year I’m frantically searching for a sweater at the last minute. Thrift stores, Wal-Mart and Target are usually good go to places to find holiday finery. This year I decided to glam my purchase up a bit. I purchased the T-shirt at Target because there wasn’t a Christmas sweater to be found and bought some garland at Party City for $1.50. The t-shirt cost around $12. I hot glued the garland around the neck, wrists and bottom of the shirt. What was once a half decent t-shirt could now qualify for the gaudy department. Party City also had a great selection of hats. I purchased a hat for $10 which completed my look. My husband’s hat says Bah Humbug. As I’ve mentioned in the past, themed parties are not his cup of tea. His sweater was borrowed from a friend and actually is not that bad, but it’s unlike anything he would he ever wear.
This year’s first place winner at the party is a friend of mine. He graciously let me take his picture knowing it was a possibility it might wind up on my blog. The picture was taken with my Iphone and the lighting isn’t the best, but hopefully you can make out that he’s a Christmas tree. He had garland wrapped around him and was decorated in lights, balls, and candy canes. I believe the garland was fastened on with safety pins.
While I was at Target I spotted the above display, but for the life of me couldn’t find the sweater. It must have been a hot item. I’ve even tried to purchase it on Target.com for next year, but couldn’t find it. However, they did have some boxer shorts with Mr. Kitty on them. Christmas fashions never disappoint and are just the thing to get you in the holly jolly spirit. When my kids were little they got a new set of Christmas pajamas every year. As teens I let go of the Christmas pajama tradition, but thanks to some Target finds it’s been reinstated this year. Do you have any present or past Christmas fashion traditions? Please share in the comments.

Now this is a craft I can actually do! I will be heading to Target to see if I can find that shirt. I did see the Meowy Christmas sweater in Target and remember thinking that was awful. It didn’t dawn on me that it was probably meant for an ugly sweater contest!

I don’t know if the meowy sweater was meant to be for an ugly sweater party, but I can’t imagine anyone wearing it otherwise. I’ve been known to be wrong though. I wish I could find it. It makes me laugh. I bought the boxers for my son 🙂

What a hilarious party! And that cat sweater…just…wow. You should see the ones my daughter bought at the thrift store…I have no idea what she is planning on doing with them, but they are awful.

The ugly Christmas sweaters have become quite popular. The kids are getting into them too. I think some of them wear them to school. Your daughter will be prepared 🙂 The cat one just makes me laugh! I think there were actually more men’s sweaters to choose from than womens this year.

Here in Arizona someone actually had a stand set up selling ugly Christmas sweaters.
I didn’t have the time to stop and look.
We also used to have a contest in our office every year.
Have a merry Christmas!!!
Tell Chris and the kids Hi for me.

So good to hear from you Nancy. I can’t believe there was an actual stand for ugly Christmas sweaters. They’ve become quite popular. I hope you have a great Christmas with your family and that all is well. I wish I was going to Europe again in 2014 🙂

You and Chris look so cute! I’m bummed I missed the party.

Love this idea, and “Meowy” takes the prize, in my opinion, too!

Thanks Carol. The meowy sweater just makes me laugh every time I look at it. I wish I could find it. Happy Holidays!

Whoa, those are pretty bad! Love the tinsel fringe. Going to pass this post along to my kids who live for the ugly sweater parties and bar crawls (yes, the kids are over 21…) !!

It’s become quite a popular party. I wish I had kept my sweaters from the early 90’s 🙂

I want to be a Christmas tree. The lights really make that special!

That seriously looks like so much fun. I’ve never been invited to an ugly Christmas sweater party – but I would go if I were. Much more fun than trying to find the perfect “cute” thing to wear. I think I need to move to KC:)

I think the ugly Christmas sweater parties are a big thing now. You can even find sweaters with the party in mind at Target 🙂 We’d love to have you come to KC! You can help me get organized 🙂

My husband lived in KC for awhile – big Royals and Chiefs fan, which is weird out here on the East Coast. I do hope we get to meet sometime:)
