I love looking at decorating ideas and making updates to my home every year. My good friend and neighbor Kyra Davila is an interior designer and she graciously agreed to guest post for me today on decorating trends for 2014. Kyra owns KD Interior Design and shares decorating tips on her Facebook page. If you’ve been procrastinating about updating your home make this your year for change.
2014…..New Year, New Trends
by Kyra Davila
With home décor and design becoming so mainstream and accessible to everybody due to social media, blogs and websites like Pinterest and Houzz, people are awakening to new ideas. They’re feeling empowered and confident to try out new things, take risks and think outside the box. Finally, they can now visualize, explore and discover their own style!
Some of the hottest trends people are buzzing about for 2014 are: bright & bold pops of color to paler palettes, combining different metallic finishes like brass, copper & gold, hanging wallpaper on accent walls or small spaces, fur upholstery, jewelry-like lighting fixtures, abstract art, geometrics, patterns, lighter woods, chalkboard, vintage pieces and even macramé.
Let’s take a closer look…
Color Confidence
Goodbye boring beige, hello color! Whether people opt to paint a couple of their walls with trendy colors like indigo, teal or turquoise to create a dramatic and glamorous backdrop for their spaces or keep a neutral base throughout and add pops of color with home accents like pillows, art, objects or textiles; beige is definitely out. Gray has become the new neutral, and I think it will stay for quite a while.
A neutral base in the home makes for a versatile space that can change with the seasons and can easily embrace a new trend. Cool and paler colors, even whites are trending colors for your walls contrasted with colorful furniture, painted cabinets, metallics and plenty of personal expression.

Geometrics
Geometric patterns are showing up everywhere from furniture to art and accessories and lighting. Fractured, fragmented and angular patterns, particularly hexagons and prisms are cool, funky, modern and sophisticated, all in one. Done tastefully, they’re a great element that adds visual interest to a space without being over-the-top.

Mix & Match
With so many options to choose from, it can be quite a challenge to settle with just one look for your home. The solution? Layers. Mix & match, not only styles, but also different materials, finishes and textures like metals, woods and textiles for a daring and trendy look.

Make a Statement
Nothing beats Gallery Walls to combine pattern, color and art all at the same time. They are popping up everywhere and seem to be a must-have in any home lately. Whether you are displaying kids art, photographs, mirrors, trinkets or any meaningful collection, it’s the perfect way to make a personal statement in your home with loads of character, creativity and wow factor.

Up & Re-Purposing
There’s nothing like the thrill of a good find. Vintage and one of a kind pieces will continue to be sought after and will take center stage in homes everywhere. They become conversational items that help balance classic & contemporary to create timeless, adaptable and lasting interiors we all want.

Pattern Clash
Patterns are also here to stay! While any graphic pattern will look great, this is the year for floral chintz and houndstooth fabrics. Separate or combined, florals and geometrics are a beautiful addition to any space. Textiles and Textures are the one item in the house that bonds everything together. They determine your style, link your colors and create smooth transitions between your layers.
You can play with different patterns and contrast color for a hot geometric look or embrace the color of the year by adding pops of Radiant Orchid, hues of blue and deep pinks throughout the house. If you gravitate more towards nature and all things organic, bring a little of the outdoors – in, incorporate animals, decorate with burlap, branches and modern botanicals. Or if global chic is your thing, you’ll have plenty of ethnic inspired textiles to choose from. Use them on walls or on items such as seat cushions, bedding, accent pillows and window treatments to make a stylish statement in your home this year.

I love ALL of these looks. I wish I had some decorating talent. It just makes me feel stymied. I’d love to be able to mix patterns and have a bold pop of color and have it turn out fabulous like that. I’d never even think to mix those patterns but it is Gorgeous!! I want a talented friend and neighbor who is a designer! (and the money to hire her to make my house look good!!) –Lisa

I’m not very good at mixing patterns either Lisa. I have gotten better over the years though. It helps to have creative friends to bounce ideas off of. Sometimes all you need is a consultation to get you started. Decorating can be so overwhelming. Time and money helps a lot too 🙂

Always fun to see what the trends are… the “up cycling” and “mix and match” are great trends for the budget-conscious. Love it!

I love “up cycling”! I have a few pieces I bought at an antique store that were repainted. I wish I loved to paint furniture. There are so many neat things you can do and the quality is often better on some older furniture because it’s solid wood. I also love having a unique piece.

I love these looks — all of them! I have virtually no decorating talent. I am a big copy cat! I have a lot of work to do on my house.

Sometimes the best place to start is by copying and collecting images that you like. The Pottery Barn catalog is like a decorating Bible to me 🙂

With havin so much content do you ever run into any issues of plagorism or copyright
infringement? My website has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it looks like a lot of
it is popping it up all over the web without my authorization.
Do you know any ways to help protect against content from being stolen?
I’d genuinely appreciate it.
