I’m a car singer and radio station flipper. I don’t like to sing in front of people, but singing in my car is a simple joy. As I was flipping through my favorite XM radio stations 70’s on 7, The Pulse, 80’s on 8, Hits 1 and 90’s on 9, I caught part of a DJ discussion on songs voted best and worst for driving. I was curious to see the full list so I came home and googled it. I’ve been needing to update my iPod playlist and I thought it would also be good blogging material.
Forbes reported the results from a survey commissioned by Insurance.com. Two thousand drivers were asked to choose the best and worst songs for driving as well as songs they secretly listen to in the car. It doesn’t list the age of those people surveyed, but I’m guessing by the song titles they are in the 35-55 age range. I’m closer to the 50 age range and six of the top 10 best songs are on my iPod playlist. Number one is one of my all time favorite songs and a great sing-a-long song. My taste in music ranges from funky to folksy with a little head banging music thrown in from time to time. The one thing you won’t find on my playlist is a lot of country unless it’s “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line. I have a lot of friends who are big fans of country and it’s extremely popular right now. I have to admit that little by little it’s starting to grow on me. I’m a big fan of 70’s music and there are a few tunes I probably wouldn’t admit listening to, Shadow Dancing anyone? I recently heard “The Giving Tree” by The Plain White T’s on the Pulse and love it. The song was inspired by the children’s book by Shel Silverstein. The Giving Tree is one of my favorite books I even wrote about it HERE.
What are your thoughts? Do you agree with the best and worst driving songs results and what do you secretly listen to?

Love this song too!! Now I know who sings it. I am listening to xm 80s and 90s music. My kids will listen to the Alternative Music station. I like that station , too, but I won’t intentionally put it on.

I’ll have to check out the alternative station. I bet Lauren would like it 🙂

I had not heard that song yet! I really like it!
I’m going to cast my vote for Journey driving songs 🙂

I love Journey! I saw them perform a few years ago with Steve Perry’s replacement. I can’t remember his name offhand, but he sounds just like him.

So I love all the top 10 driving songs but on the songs that make you want to change the channel….I don’t agree with Taylor Swifts song and Katy Perry’s song. I still like those! I found XM 17….all love songs. Sometimes I’ll leave my country station to see what’s playing there.
dawn says
I’m with you on Katy Perry. I used to like Taylor Swift, but now she annoys me. I’ll have to check out XM 17 🙂
The Dose of Reality says
That first list…I would literally SQUEE and belt out all ten of those if they came on the radio during a car trip!! (but I like #2 and #10 on the other list!!) –Lisa
Paul M says
As cheesy as it is, I would also sing-a-long to “Mambo #5”, but Creed would get changed within the first 2 seconds.
dawn says
I can picture you singing to Mambo #5 🙂

I kinda agreed with the sing along list… and then I totally agreed with the worst songs list! LOL This cracked me up!
