Movies are a great escape, give you a new perspective and can kindle a romance. My first date with my husband ( 30 years ago) was at the movie theater. I met him when I was 16 and we went to see Two of A Kind with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John. It was also January 20 and there isn’t a ton to do during the winter months in Kansas. Frigid temperatures, ice and snow have many people staying indoors this winter so I thought it would be fun to compile a list of movies about love for this Valentine’s Day weekend.
If you’ve read any of my past posts. You know how I love lists and my very first post was about the movie Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
I found a list of the 100 Best Romantic Movies to help jog my memory and asked family and friends what some of their favorite movies about love are. They aren’t only movies about romantic love, but love between friends, family and the unconditional love of a dog. If you’ve never seen Hachi and are a dog lover, it is a must see, but have a few kleenex close. In terms of romantic movies, the first movie that my husband and I both thought of was Serendipity. A lot of the movies on my list are oldies, but goodies. I hope you enjoy my picks and maybe discover one or two movies you haven’t seen.

Two movies came to mind an old “Pride and Prejudice” and a new one we
watched recently “Middleton”. The new movie will be good for all those sending
their kids to college in the fall. Have fun with your sweetie!
dawn says
Thanks Cindy! I’ll have to check out Middleton. That is one I haven’t seen and as you know I will be sending an 18 yr old off to college in the fall. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

My first date was also seeing a movie – Smokey & The Bandit.
I read through that list and confirmed that I am NOT a romantic. I have only watched 15 of the 50 movies listed and honestly only liked less than half of them. 🙁 People don’t believe me but I have never seen Beaches, You Got Mail or Sleepless In Seattle and I absolutely hated Titanic.
My favorite in that list is Sense & Sensibility and I will say that I cry everytime I watch it! Maybe there is hope for me yet!
Some people are Christmas Grinches, I guess I’m a Valentine’s Grinch.
dawn says
You are scaring me Jeanene 🙂 I thought everyone (in our age range) has seen Beaches, You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle. You must not be a Meg Ryan fan. I hope you still have a happy Valentine’s Day, Grinch.

What a great list!! I am printing it out and then opening a window for Netflix RIGHT NOW! I’m definitely putting the ones I haven’t seen on my list!! Thanks!! –Lisa

I hope you enjoy them Lisa. Keep in mind some of them are pretty old. Have a great Valentine’s Day! I hope you get to watch some movies.

What a great list! There are so many I have forgotten about that I need to rewatch.

I need to go back and re-watch a few myself. Have a great Valentine’s Day!
Stacey @ Likes to Smile says
I’ve only seen 19 of the 50! I got some movie watching to do! And I also bawled through the entirety of P.S. I Love You.
dawn says
There are many on the list before your time Stacey 🙂 P.S. I Love You was good, but I don’t think I could watch it again. I hope you have a wonderful Valentine’s Day and enjoy a few movies!

The first movie that popped into my mind was “Always”, which didn’t even make your list! Shame on you. And “Doctor Zhivago” isn’t one of mom’s favorites…..it IS mom’s favorite. #2 (“The Money Pit”) isn’t even close.
dawn says
I don’t remember Always. I’ll have to check it out. There is a good possibility you’re kidding with me though. Don’t forget Funny Girl, it may be a tie with Dr. Zhivago.

OK. Looked at that nice long list, and can’t remember which ones I actually saw, and which ones I just remember the name. I guess that’s the risk of being over 50 when you read a list of 50 options. Guess I’ll just start at the top and work my way thru the ones I’m unsure about!!! 😉
dawn says
Don’t feel so bad. I’ve seen all of them, but can’t remember specific details about a lot of them.

I must really enjoy movies about love because I’ve seen almost all of these. I remember when my girls were in the “Walk To Remember” phase.. we watched it a million times!
