My friend Jamie made this Chinese dip for a Super Bowl party and it was a huge hit especially with the teenagers. You know a dip is good when a half hour into the party most of it is gone. The word spread it was good, and luckily I was able to snag a taste of it before it disappeared. Her kids request it all the time and it’s also a favorite of my daughters.
My friend Anne recently made it for a party and I snapped a few pictures before it was devoured. She’s not a fan of cilantro so you won’t find a sign of it in my photos, but I’m a huge fan of cilantro and would add it. Either way, the dip is delicious and easy to make. The flavors blend together nicely and the peanuts and water chestnuts give it a little crunch.
Serve this sweet and sour chinese dip with fried wontons. Most Chinese restaurants will usually sell them to you. I can’t say I’ve come across them in the grocery store, but if you have an Asian market close by you can probably purchase them there as well. If you know of other places to purchase fried wontons please leave a comment at the bottom of this post. You could also spread the dip on a cracker, but I think the wontons are more fun and tasty.
Sweet & Sour Chinese Dip | | Print |
- 12 oz. cream cheese
- ⅔ cup grated carrots
- ⅓ cup chopped peanuts
- ¼ cup chopped water chestnuts
- ¼ cup green onion
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp chopped cilantro
- 1 clove garlic minced
- a bottle of sweet and sour sauce
- Spread cream cheese on a plate.
- In a small bowl combine carrots, peanuts, water chestnuts, green onion, soy sauce, cilantro and garlic.
- Spread mixture on top of cream cheese then pour a good amount of sweet and sour sauce over the top.
- Serve with wontons.

This looks so good! I make my own fried wontons. Just buy a pack of wonton wrappers (I know Walmart sells them). Cut them into desired widths of strips. Heat up a pot of oil and drop them in individually. They puff and turn golden very quickly! Make sure you cut the strips ahead of time and be prepared to stay at the oil until they’re done! This could probably be done with egg roll wrappers too….

I also make my own. You don’t even have to fry them individually. I stack up the wrappers, maybe 10 at a time, cut into strips and sprinkle them into the oil. As they fry, they will curl up and separate. Just stir them with tongs once they start to turn white so they cook evenly. Be sure to watch them carefully – it takes a few minutes for them to turn brown but once they start, it goes quickly so be ready to remove them quickly!

I was thinking of trying this with pork crackle chips, you know the air puffed ones!? How do you think it will go?
I’m not sure if the flavor of the pork rind would be overpowering, but it doesn’t hurt to give it a try. It could be a good combination and you could always have crackers or the fried wontons as a backup. I know of someone who used orange sauce instead of the sweet and sour sauce and they liked that too.

How far in advance can you make this?
My recommendation would be several hours beforehand.
Make won ton chips in the oven. Spray with evoo or Pam. 450 degrees for like 5 minutes. They turn out great!! I cut the won ton wrappers in half diagonally.

great recipe – thanks for posting. I added imitation crab to the cream cheese so it’s like a Chinese Crab Rangoon dip. It turned out great!

This dip is great. It’s one of those recipes, where when I told people what it was, you could tell they didn’t want to try it. Once they did, everyone loved it.

Have you ever tried this warmed up a bit so that it’s ooey and gooey and delightful? It just sounds like it would be and I thought I would try that.

Just regular cocktail peanuts without the skin, but you could probably use honey roasted too.
