Tie up summer by making back to school tie-dye spirit wear with a friend or two before school starts. My daughter loves to tie-dye so I was excited about the opportunity to be part of Tulip Tie-Dye’s, Tie-Dye Your Summer campaign. I had never used Tulip Tie-Dye before. The one step process was easy and perfect for multi-color projects and group activities. Dyes are permanent and color-fast, so they won’t fade in the wash.
The tie-dye process is simple and only requires a few materials. I chose to make our tie-dye fashions outside because my daughter can get a little messy. The Tulip Tie-Dye kits came with rubber bands, the bottles filled with powdered dye and complete instructions on how to make different designs. All you need is water.
I covered our deck with plastic bags to avoid having a tie-dyed deck.
Since we made multiple shirts and clutches we placed them on paper plates and then later put them into gallon plastic bags for the dye to set.
Step 1: Shows folding a t-shirt into a spiral and then securing it with rubber bands.
Step 2:Apply dye to the shirt in sections.
Step 3: Another method is to fold the shirt like an accordion and section it off with rubber bands then apply dye to each section.
Step 4:Shows the finished t-shirt ready to be placed in a plastic bag. Let your shirt sit for at least six hours. We let ours sit overnight.
Rinse your t-shirt with water until excess dye is removed and wash tie-dye items separately the first wash or two.
My daughter and her friend also tie-dyed small clutch purses using the ombre method. You simply apply dye to the bottom of the clutch, dip a paint brush into water and spread the dye with water working your way to the top of the clutch. Reapply dye and water as needed. The clutches are perfect for carrying cell phones. I don’t know of a teenager that goes anywhere without their cell phone.
Tulip Tie-Dye Kits come with complete instructions and directions for different techniques. My daughter enjoyed doing her own thing while her friend enjoyed following the techniques from Tulip. Tie-Dye T-shirts are great for spirit wear days. Show your school spirit by making one in your school colors.
