Fall has always been a tricky a time for me when it comes to freshening up my outdoor pots. Some of my summer plants still look great, but I want them to coincide with the fall season. This year I took a simple approach which takes about 5 minutes or less to decorate your outdoor or indoor plants for fall. I was inspired by Ricki at Red Cedar Gardens. She is a master at putting container gardens together.
Fall is my favorite time of year. I love all the colors of fall, pumpkins, cornstalks and bittersweet. Every year I try to come up with a different idea for my front porch container. I shared last year’s decor here. This year I wanted to work with what I had. I’ve had this little spruce tree that I planted two winters ago. It is a hardy little tree despite my inability to regularly give it water.
Over the summer months I had a little white bird statue in the nest with the burlap chevron ribbon around it. I just changed out the bird for a black crow and added some gourds. I purchased a few pumpkins to put around the base of my pot and my summer pot became ready for fall. This winter I’ll replace the crow for a cardinal and use Christmas ribbon and pinecones around the base of the pot.
I love succulent plants because they require very little watering. I always plant several pots of them. An easy way to decorate them for fall is to add a statue of a squirrel or owl to them along with some gourds. In case you haven’t noticed I’m a big fan of owls. You could also add some twigs or branches. Be sure to think about levels and display things with varying heights in your planter.
I’m sure HGTV won’t be knocking on my door anytime soon for my decorating brilliance, but if you still haven’t incorporated touches of fall to your outdoor pots these are some easy ways that will take you 5 minutes or less.

I think HGTV should stop by your house. I love the way you decorate. I like how you added the black stripped burlap to your outdoor planter I never thought about doing something like that.

Thanks Keri! I’m loving the addition of my new royal blue pumpkin. It adds a nice bright pop of color 🙂
