Most of Kansas City is smiling because the Kansas City Royals are the 2014 American League Champions and are playing in the World Series tomorrow. I think at one point in my blog I shared that you’d never find me writing about sports. I don’t know much about the rules of sports and it’s not a passion of mine. I enjoy the social aspects of sporting events like people watching, visiting with friends and enjoying a ballpark hot dog. However, this post isn’t just about baseball it’s about feeling joy.
There has been a positive energy in the air these past few weeks and it’s not just my imagination because my friends have felt it too. Even if you aren’t a huge baseball fan you can’t help, but smile for this Kansas City Royals team. I was a freshman in college the last time the KC Royals went to the World Series and now my son is a freshman in college. It has been a long time coming.
I’ve sat through many baseball games over the years cheering on the Royals while busily chatting with friends. My head is often turned to the side and I’ve often had to catch the replay. This post season Royals team is different though and my eyes are watching them. I even watched post season clips on the MLB station with my husband one night which would normally never happen.
There is a camaraderie and humility to this team that I haven’t sensed in long time. I’m not an expert on baseball, but in my opinion there is no one superstar on this team. They have all had their shinning moments and truly work together as a team. There is the power of promise and hope behind this team. Last week I had the fortunate opportunity to attend the Championship game when the Royals swept the Baltimore Orioles. I felt very lucky to have experienced history in the making. Everyone in the Kauffman stadium had a smile on their face. Strangers were giving high fives and hugging each other. We were all there to cheer on the boys in blue (actually white that day). It wasn’t about ourselves or in my opinion even baseball, it was about lifting a team up and cheering them on to help them reach their dreams.
If I could bottle up this hope and joy Kansas City is experiencing right now I would. This feeling of brotherhood unfortunately only seems to occur during times of tragedies like 9/11 or when sports teams go to the championships. I wish it existed every day, but if it did maybe we wouldn’t feel it as deeply when it does occur.
Thanks Kansas City Royals for making this city SMILE. In my opinion it doesn’t matter if you win or lose the World Series because you are already champions.

What a great post, Dawn! You described the Royals perfectly.
Twenty nine years ago I was crying in my beer on the other side of I-70. I grew up in St. Louis and no matter where I live I will be a Cardinals fan. BUT, to tell you the truth I wasn’t looking forward to reliving another 1-70 series because this time there is a little bit of Blue in my blood. This team has been amazing to watch this year and I’m so happy for them.
Let’s Go Royals!!!!!

Thanks Jeanene! I’m glad it’s not another I-70 series as well. I feel like there have already been a lot of comparisons to 1985’s team and they deserve their own World Series.

Awesome post, Dawn! But why didn’t you mention the time you and Chris were on the Kiss Cam but you didn’t see as you were on your phone! Haha!
Dawn Pasco says
Ha!Ha! I actually thought about it Denise!

That was a GREAT post Dawn! You just put summed it up perfectly how I think most all of the fans feel, even this morning after their loss of game one. Already, they’ve done so much for us, they have nothing to prove.

Thanks Angela. I had the opportunity to go to last night’s game and the atmosphere was noticeably different. However, I’m still optimistic and will be cheering them on again tonight!

I loved your post about the Royals. It’s exciting to see the city come together with joy and happiness. Rob wore his Royals shirt while in Florida on a business trip and he said random people would come up and give him a high five.

Thanks Keri! I think it’s been such a positive boost for the city and fun to hear about other parts of the country cheering the Royals on.
